Hi fellow writers,

Inspiration can feel like an elusive creature, but over the years, I’ve learned it’s not about waiting for it to strike—it’s about creating the right conditions for it to flourish. I thought I’d start this thread to share some of my tips and hear what works for you.

Start with “What If?”

One of the simplest ways to spark an idea is to ask, “What if?” These two words have endless potential. Whether you’re exploring a historical mystery, imagining a world where something is different, or simply rethinking a well-worn trope, this question can unlock all sorts of possibilities.

Stay Open to the Everyday

Some of my best ideas have come from unexpected places—an overheard conversation, a line in a book, or even the way the light hits a certain landscape. The key is to stay open and curious. Carry a notebook or use your phone to jot down ideas as they come. Inspiration often hides in plain sight.

Walk It Out

I find walking to be one of the most effective ways to loosen mental blocks and invite new ideas. There’s something about moving your body that frees your mind. No destination is needed—just let your thoughts wander.

Layer Your Inspiration

For me, inspiration often comes in layers. It starts with a seed—an idea or observation that feels intriguing. Then, I start making connections: pairing that idea with something from history, an emotion I want to evoke, or a piece of dialogue that’s been rattling around in my head. Over time, these layers build into something meaningful.

Don’t Overthink It

Not every idea has to feel groundbreaking at first. Sometimes the simplest starting point—like a single image or a snippet of a memory—can grow into a rich story. The trick is to give yourself permission to explore without judgment.
